16th Annual Chicago Area Swim Across America Fundraiser

Come to Ohio Street Beach on July 18th at 8am and swim 1/2 Mile, 1M, 1.5M or 3M in Lake Michigan to raise money for the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center. You can swim as an individual or as part of the SWIM FOR LIFE - TEAM EVANSTON.

Everyone on our team has been touched by cancer in some way, whether it is an immediate family member, a close friend or relatives and friends of people close to us. We hope our contributions to Swim Across America and its mission will in some way help to put an end to this horrific disease and honor those who have and are struggling with its devastation.

As a Team, we look forward to the swim as a day to honor LIFE: a day of thanks for our health, a day of thanks for freedom, a day of appreciation for our friends and love ones and a day of giving to those who need our help. This year our goal is to raise $19,100 and we are almost half way there. We thank you for your support and ask you to be as generous as you can. Together, we can all make a difference.

Annual Beach Party

Steve and Carol Mullins are once again opening their summer beach house in Michigan for a party on July 25th. Come up after practice for a party with the Wild Catfish in Harbert MI. You can camp on the beach or reserve a bed in the bunk house with Steve.

Steve revs up his ski boat for fun on Lake Michigan. There will be bbq'ing, volleyball, swimming, water skiing and time to kick back and relax with the Catfish. Once the sun goes down there will be a bonfire, smores and fireworks. Bring your swimsuit, favorite party beverage, something to grill and something to pass, and head north on July 25th for some fun in the sun with the Wild Catfish. Talk to Heidi or Steve if you have any questions.

Summer Practices!

Summer practices started June 15th! We are swimming at Centennial Pool in Wilmette. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 5:15am to 6:30am, Tuesday and Thursday at 9pm to 10:15pm, and Saturday at 7:15am to 8:45am.

We do swim in the rain, however if it is thundering and lighting we cannot get into the pool. Please check the calendar for updates. If the weather is particularly bad the site will be updated with info about practice at least 30 minutes prior to the start. Just remember it could be pouring and thundering in Chicago and fine in Evanston so most of the time we will make the call about workout at Centennial Pool.

The summer session will cost $165 (payable to Evanston Masters). Fill out the 2009 Summer Registration Form , and bring it, with your check to practice. If you are not a current ILMSA/USMS member you can join here.

Better Than E-Harmony

Since its inception in 1982, Evanston Masters has had over 10 marriages emerge from its waters. Not only is our swim team an arena where we pursue our athletic talents, but it is also a place where we socialize and have fun outside of the pool. Having lunch after swim meets, going on team trips, attending Nevins’ nights, and throwing holiday parties are just a few ways that Evanston Masters’ couples have gotten together. Two couples began dating on a swim team trip to Cozumel, Mexico in the summer of 2001, and one story is featured on the USMS National Website.

As far as we can tell, the following people have met and married on the Evanston Masters team: Karl Steinke and Abigail Troncoso, Liz Gherde and Larry Stoegbauer, Brandy Mayberry and Jay Toth, Jenny and Mark Lenhart, Brian Leverens and Faith Seaman, Christy and Jeff Hemeseth, Steve and Becky Heller, Mark and Jillian Steiner, Bob and Nancy Klein, Dick Dooley and Mary O’Neill. Not all of our married swimmers are still on the team, but perhaps we can one day add your name and your story to our ever growing list of couples who found love in the lanes at ETHS.

2008 Fall/Winter Registration Form and bring it with your check to practice. If you are not a current ILMSA/USMS member you can join here.

14th Annual Chicago Area Swim Across America Fundraiser Wrap-Up

Unfortunately the Swim Across America event in Lake Michigan was canceled due to lightening over
the lake. However, the Evanston Team was able to raise $25,591.00, beating our goal of $23,000.00.

We thank everyone who donated to this worthy cause. All funds raised through our event here in
Chicago are donated to the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center (CBCC) at Loyola University Medical Center. To date, Swim Across America - Chicago has raised close to one million dollars for the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center.
